”ささやかな仕掛けで空間をつくる”

 

私たちは、空間の形をつくるというより、
そこで起きる行為や関係のための「仕掛け」を設計している気がします。

建築はしばしば、用途や動線を整理し、
使い方を分かりやすくするためのものとして考えられます。
けれど実際の空間では、人の振る舞いはそこまで素直ではありません。

少し立ち止まったり、なんとなく居続けたり、
予定と違う使い方をしたりすることが、しばしば起こります。

私たちはそうした予測しきれない振る舞いを前提に、
使い方を決めるのではなく、
行為が自然に立ち上がるような「仕掛け」を大切にしたいと考えています。

それは何かを強く誘導するものではなく、
解釈の余地を残した小さなズレを含んでいます。
そのズレによって、使われ方が少しずつ変わり続けていく。

そんな状態をつくろうとしています。

建築・内装・家具・設備といったスケールをまたぎながら、
何かが起こるけれど、その結果は人それぞれ違っていく、
そういう状況を、静かに支えるような仕掛けです。

用途や規模が変わっても、やっていることはあまり変わりません。

どのプロジェクトでも、
「どう使うか」を決めるのではなく、
「どんな使われ方をするんだろう？」という余地を少しだけ残したいと思っています。

完成したあとに、設計者の想定から少しずれた使われ方をしているほうが、
うまく機能していることが多い。

そういう空間のほうが、いろんな人にとって居心地がよくて、
長く使われている場所は、だいたいそうなっている気がします。

We don’t so much design the form of a space as we design small interventions that shape what might happen within it.

Architecture is often understood as a way to organize functions and circulation, making spaces easy to use and understand.
But in reality, people don’t behave so predictably.

They pause, linger, or use things in ways that were never intended.
And that’s not an exception—it’s quite normal.

 

Rather than prescribing how a space should be used,
we are interested in creating conditions where different actions can emerge naturally.

These interventions are not meant to control behavior.
They are small shifts—subtle misalignments that leave room for interpretation.
Through them, the way a space is used can slowly evolve over time.

Working across architecture, interiors, furniture, and equipment,
we try not to resolve a space into a fixed, complete form,
but to leave it open—so that different things can happen,
and different outcomes can unfold for different people.

Regardless of scale or program, our approach remains the same.

Instead of deciding how something should be used,
we prefer to leave a small question behind:
How might this be used?

In many cases, spaces work better when they are used slightly differently than originally imagined.

The places that continue to be used over time often seem to share that quality.
